Dr. Tarun Kumar Praharaj has been associated with BM Birla Heart Research Centre since 1989. He has been working as a Full time Senior consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Former Director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at BM Birla Heart Research Centre, Kolkata. He has completed his Post graduate Fellowship in Adult Cardiology and Clinical Research Fellowship in Invasive Cardiology from Philippines Heart Centre. Dr. Praharaj is also a fellow of The American College of Cardiology and a Fellow of the Cardiological Society of India.
Dr. Praharaj was the preferred consultant to treat personalities like Nobel Laureate Mother Teresa in 1993 and 1996. He has performed stent angioplasty on a 94-year-old man, one of the oldest surviving patients in India who celebrated his 101st birthday in October 2011. He implanted a drug-coated stent on a 75-year-old lady on 7th June 2002, the first such procedure conducted in India on the day of its launch. He has also performed primary angioplasty on a patient aged 87 years successfully.
His areas of expertise include Coronary Angioplasty, Primary Angioplasty, Stenting, Valvuloplasty, and high-risk and complex coronary interventions.
He has been conferred Honorary Doctorate Degree (D.Litt) by Nobel Laureate Shri Kailash Satyarthi at Adamas University on 9th February 2024.
